Making Electrical Connections Safely

B. Connecting wires to devices: switches and receptacles (NOT GFCIs).

1. Strip about ½" of insulation off each wire.
2. Bend a hook on the end of each wire.
3. Put the hook on the screw so when the screw is tightened the wire is pulled into the screw.
4. Tighten the screw.


Visual & mechanical checks:

1. No copper is visible under the screw; the screw covers it.

2. No insulation is under the screw.

3. No exposed copper is below the device.
